The characters in the series

The central character in the series is Elena Gilbert, a teenager who starts off the series as a high school student. Elena is a human, but she is also a doppelgänger – meaning she looks exactly like another person, in this case, Katherine Pierce. Katherine was a vampire who turned Elena’s parents, Miranda and Grayson Gilbert, into vampires. Grayson and Miranda then fed on humans and turned them into vampires too. When the town of Mystic Falls began to suspect that something was going on, they hired Pearl to use her magic to keep the townspeople from finding out about the vampires.

Elena’s parents were killed in a car accident when she was fifteen years old, which left her an orphan. She was then taken in by her Uncle John (her father’s brother) and Aunt Jenna (her mother’s sister). Later on in the series, it is revealed that John Gilbert is actually Elena’s biological father, which makes Jenna her aunt by marriage instead of by blood.

When the series begins, Mystic Falls has just been hit by a hurricane. In the aftermath of the storm, bodies are being found all over town – drained of blood with two puncture wounds on their necks. The townspeople suspect that these murders are being committed by vampires and they start to hunt for them. Meanwhile, Elena is trying to cope with the loss of her parents and she starts to rebel against her uncle and aunt. She also finds herself being drawn to Stefan Salvatore, a vampire who is trying to resist his bloodlust for human blood.

As the series progresses, more and more characters are introduced – both human and supernatural. Some of the main characters in the series include:
-Elena Gilbert – the central character in the series; a human girl who falls in love with Stefan Salvatore, a vampire
-Stefan Salvatore – a vampire who falls in love with Elena Gilbert; he is able to resist drinking human blood but often struggles with his craving for it
-Damon Salvatore – Stefan’s older brother; he is not as successful as Stefan at resisting human blood and he often gives into his thirst for it
-Matt Donovan – Elena’s best friend and ex-boyfriend; he is one of the few people who knows about vampires before they are revealed to the townspeople
-Bonnie Bennett – another one of Elena’s best friends; she is a Witch whose powers begin to grow stronger as the series progresses
-Caroline Forbes – one of Bonnie’s friends; she starts off as Matt’s girlfriend but later falls in love with Stefan
