In the fourth season of The Vampire Diaries, Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) is trying to adjust to a life without her parents and finally living with her aunt Jenna Sommers (Sara Canning). She is also trying to deal with her new found attraction to Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) and the fact that he killed Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen), her brother. Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) is also still dealing with the aftermath of Elijah’s (Daniel Gillies) death and she has taken it upon herself to make sure that he does not come back to Mystic Falls. Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) is also trying to move on from Klaus Mikaelson’s (Joseph Morgan) betrayal but she finds it hard when it seems like Klaus is everywhere she turns. Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) has finally been turned into a werewolf but he has no control over his transformation and often turns into a wolf at inopportune moments. Meanwhile, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) is still trying to get used to being human again but he finds it hard when there are vampires constantly trying to kill him for being “The Ripper.”
The fourth season of The Vampire Diaries follows Elena as she tries to deal with all these new changes in her life while also attending college at Whitmore University. Along with Bonnie and Caroline, Elena quickly becomes close friends with a fellow student named Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig). They are also joined by Meredith Fell (Torrey DeVitto), a doctor who takes an interest in Stefan. Meanwhile, Damon begins working with Klaus in an attempt to find a way to turn Elena back into a vampire so that he can have her forever. However, things quickly go awry when they realize that they are not alone in their quest and they must face-off against Katherine Pierce (Dobrev), who has returned with an agenda of her own.
The fourth season culminates with a battle between Damon, Stefan, Katherine, Klaus, Bonnie and Caroline against Silas (Paul Wesley), an ancient immortal who wants revenge against Bonnie for trapping him underwater for two thousand years. Silas has the ability to shape-shift into anyone he wishes and uses this power to wreak havoc on Mystic Falls. In the end, Damon makes the ultimate sacrifice for Elena by killing Silas but this leaves Bonnie heartbroken as she was forced to watch him die all over again.

Meanwhile, Klaus Mikaelson plans on building an army of werewolves to take over Mystic Falls so that he can be its king
The Vampire Diaries Season 4: The Settings
Season four of the CW hit show The Vampire Diaries is based off of the fourth book in L.J. Smith’s series, The Struggle. The season starts off with Elena Gilbert, played by Nina Dobrev, and her friends Bonnie Bennett, played by Kat Graham, and Matt Donovan, played by Zach Roerig, returning to Mystic Falls after spending the summer away. While they were away Bonnie and Matt had developed a romantic relationship which put a rift between her and Elena. Along with the love triangle between Stefan Salvatore, played by Paul Wesley, Damon Salvatore, played by Ian Somerhalder, and Elena that has been going on since the first season, season four also focuses on Klaus Mikaelson’s, play by Joseph Morgan, attempt to create more hybrids as he did with Tyler Lockwood, played by Michael Trevino. This puts Tyler’s mother Carol Lockwood, played by Susan Walters at risk as well as Klaus’s sister Rebekah Mikaelson who is also trying to stop him.

Along with this, Stefan Salvatore is dealing with his own demon, as he is forced to feed on humans to survive. Damon Salvatore is also struggling this season, as he deals with his feelings for Elena and battles against Stefan for her affections.
Although The Vampire Diaries season 4 is based off of two different books in the series, it often strays from the source material. This can be seen in the relationship between Stefan and Damon Salvatore, as well as in the character development of Katherine Pierce. Despite these changes, the fourth season remains true to the core story line of the books and is a must-watch for any fan of the Vampire Diaries book series.
