The series premiered on The CW on September 10, 2009, and concluded on March 10, 2017, airing 171 episodes over eight seasons.

The Vampire Diaries is set in Mystic Falls, Virginia, a fictional small town haunted by supernatural beings. The series follows the life of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a teenage girl who has just lost both parents in a car accident, as she falls in love with a 162-year-old vampire named Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). Their relationship becomes increasingly complicated as Stefan’s demonic older brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) enters the picture, with a plan to bring back their past lover Katherine Pierce (also Dobrev), a vampire who looks exactly like Elena. Although Damon initially harbors an attraction to Elena, he ends up falling love with her best friend Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham). Meanwhile, Stefan falls in love with schoolgirl Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola), who later turns into a vampire as well. Forced to choose between Damon and Stefan for her protection upon learning she will mark the announcement of Klaus’s arrival into town soon after turning 18 and being sired to him for all eternity due to an old deal he had with Tyler Lockwood’s father years prior to the show’s timeline that was never carried out do to Tyler killing Klaus’s father instead per his mother’s wishes which resulted in Klaus killing Tyler’s mother as payback before taking Tyler as his daywalking slave/pawn instead leaving Caroline stranded as his only sire-less child which puts her at extreme risk since she would be an easy target for him or any of his enemies since she can’t be compelled due to not being sired nor can she turn them into vampires like regular vampires can if they so choose which they often times do due to believing that makes them stronger than regular vampires or kill them out right like Klaus almost did to Caroline after finding out about her not being sired to him during season 2 until Stefan stopped him and convinced Klaus that Caroline could still be useful to him and convinced him to let her live and turned her into a vampire himself instead which angered Stefan since he felt he should of been the one who turned her instead but decided not let it come between him and Klaus since they still needed Klaus’s help against Elijah at the time. Later on down the road it is revealed that Bonnie is actually a witch descended from one of the founding families of Mystic Falls who were aware of supernatural creatures living among them and established certain protections for their town using magical means which is also how Bonnie is able to create new spells herself as well as preform complex spells most witches wouldn’t be able too do alone or at all such has raising people from the dead or crossing over into the Other Side(afterlife) which is something only very powerful witches are able too do let alone return back from once they’ve crossed over. As the series goes on more and more supernatural creatures are introduced such has werewolves, hybrids(part werewolf/part vampire),druids, pocket dimensions/parallel universes/other worlds & time travel(which Stefan takes Elena too in season 5 during one episode) just too name a few examples.

The show became increasingly popular throughout its six-year run and was renewed for two more years before eventually coming to an end in 2017. Even though it has been off air for over two years now, it still remains one of The CW’s most popular shows and continues to have a large fan base all over the world.
