While the episode answered some questions, it left others open-ended. Here is a look at what the last episode of Vampire Diaries means for the characters.

[Spoilers ahead]

Elena Gilbert

The episode starts with Elena (Nina Dobrev) waking up from her long sleep and she is immediately confused about where she is and what is going on. Once she realizes that she is in a classroom at school, she starts to remember everything that happened before she went to sleep. She remembers that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) sacrificed himself to save her from being turned into a vampire and she also remembers Stefan (Paul Wesley) telling her that he loves her before he died. After reliving those memories, Elena decides that she wants to see Damon and Stefan again and starts to write a letter to them. However, before she can finish the letter, Bonnie (Kat Graham) comes into the room and tells her that it is time for her to wake up from her long sleep. Bonnie then takes Elena outside where they are met by Caroline (Candice King), Matt (Zach Roerig), Tyler (Michael Trevino), Alaric (Matt Davis), Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and Enzo (Michael Malarkey). Bonnie then explains to Elena that they all used dark magic to bring her back and they had to put themselves in danger in order to do it. She also tells Elena that everyone else she knows is either dead or has moved on with their lives. After hearing this, Elena decides that she wants to see Damon and Stefan again so Bonnie takes her to the Mystic Falls Cemetery where they are buried. When Elena sees their tombstones, she breaks down in tears but Bonnie comforts her by telling her that they are finally together again. After saying goodbye to Damon and Stefan, Elena decides to go back into deep sleep until Bonnie comes back for her in 100 years time.

Bonnie Bennett

Bonnie spent most of the episode trying to keep Elena safe from Kai (Chris Wood) as he was trying to kill her so he could be the only one left who knows how to do magic. However, Kai eventually catches up with them and tries to kill Bonnie but Elena protects her by sacrificing herself instead. After Kai is killed by Caroline, Bonnie decides that she wants to help Caroline raise her twins on her own as she feels like it is whatEnzo would have wanted if he was still alive.

Caroline Forbes

After Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) wiped out everyone’s memories of him in season four, Caroline’s only memory of him was the night he turned off her humanity switch which caused her a lot of pain as it was such a happy memory for him but not for her as it meant that she killed all of those people while under his control. In the final episode, Klaus reads Caroline’s mind and realizes how much pain his actions caused her so he goes back in time and changes things so that when he turns off Caroline’s humanity switch, it only lasts for an hour instead of forever which means that Caroline only kills one person instead of many which causes significantly less pain for both Klaus and Caroline. Klaus then asks Caroline if there is anything else he can do for her and she says no before Klaus walks away with tears in his eyes indicating that his feelings for Caroline are still very strong even though he knows that he can never be with her again because he is not human like she is.
In the present day, Klaus has been helping Tyler turn off his werewolf gene as Tyler does not want his son Kit Fellowship members find out about his supernatural status as they are all human except for Alaric who knows about vampires but not werewolves . When Tyler completes the transformation process, he turns into a wolf-like creature called an Ascendant which means that he now has all the powers of both a vampire and a werewolf but without any of the weaknesses which makes him extremely powerful . Klaus then gives Tyler an ultimatum – either stay away from Caroline or else he will kill him . Tyler chooses Caroline causing Klausto become enragedand says that if Tyler ever comes near Caroline again then he will make him wish he had never been born . This suggeststhat even though Klaus saysthathe wants whatis bestforCaroline , deep downhe stillwantsherforhimselfand does not wantherto bewith anyoneelse .

What the last episode of Vampire Diaries means for the fans

The last episode of Vampire Diaries aired on March 10, 2017, and it was a series finale. The showrunner/executive producer Julie Plec wrote and directed the episode.

The final episode began with a time jump, which is something that the show has done before. It then showed the characters living their lives and in some cases, coming to terms with what had happened in the previous season.

Fans were hoping for a happy ending for all of the characters but unfortunately, that was not the case. Some characters died, some left town, and others stayed.

The final scene of the show was of Stefan Salvatore (played by Paul Wesley) writing in his diary. He says that he wants to write about all of the good things that have happened since he became a vampire. He talks about how he met Damon (played by Ian Somerhalder) and how they became friends and then brothers. He talks about how they fell in love with Elena (played by Nina Dobrev) and how their love for her changed them both for the better. He talks about all of the good times they had together and how they will never forget each other.

The show ended with Stefan turning off his diary light and Damon turning off his lamp in Elena’s bedroom.

What the last episode of Vampire Diaries means for the future of the franchise

The last episode of Vampire Diaries wrapped up the series in a way that left many viewers with more questions than answers. But despite the ambiguous ending, there are a few things that we can glean about the future of the franchise.

First and foremost, it seems likely that there will be more spin-offs in the future. TheCW has already announced a new series called Legacies, which will focus on the next generation of supernatural creatures attending the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. It’s also possible that we haven’t seen the last of Damon and Stefan Salvatore (played by Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley respectively). In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Julie Plec teased that “there’s always a possibility” that they could return in some capacity.

It’s also worth noting that while the door is certainly open for more Vampire Diaries stories, Plec has said that she doesn’t currently have any plans to write any more of them. So whatever happens next, it looks like it will be up to someone else to pick up the baton and carry on the vampire saga.

The last episode of Vampire Diaries ended with a huge twist: Katherine (Nina Dobrev) killed herself in order to save Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) lives. This seems to indicate that she has finally chosen Stefan over Damon, but it’s complicated.

Katherine has been torn between Stefan and Damon since she first met them, and she has always loved them both. In the last episode, she finally realized that she couldn’t choose between them and that the only way to save them was to sacrifice herself.

This selfless act seems to indicate that Katherine truly loves Stefan more than Damon, but it’s possible that she was just trying to even the playing field. After all, she knows that Damon would do anything for Stefan and she wanted to make sure that he had the same chance at happiness.

Regardless of her motivations, Katherine’s decision means that the love triangle is finally over. Stefan and Damon can be together without her getting in the way, and they can finally move on with their lives.
