The season follows the continuing adventures of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), who falls in love with vampire Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). After realizing they are soulmates, Elena breaks off her budding romance with Stefan’s older brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) to pursue a relationship with Stefan. However, as the season progresses, Elena finds herself drawn to Damon once again, complicated by the arrival of Katherine Pierce (also played by Nina Dobrev), a doppelgänger of Elena who sinisterly wrecks havoc in Mystic Falls alongside her new vampire friend Luke Parker (Chris Brochu). Meanwhile, Bonnie Bennett’s (Kat Graham) increasing guilt over killing Kai Parker (Chris Wood) leads her down a dark path, and Caroline Forbes’ (Candice Accola) blossoming Humanity puts her at odds with Tyler Lockwood’s (Michael Trevino) new werewolf pack.
The season also focuses on theculmination of the Mystic Falls Gang’s efforts to kill Silas – the world’s first immortal being and doppelgänger of leader recruit Qetsiyah – as he attempts to resurrect his long-dead witch lover Bonnie from the Other Side. His actions unintentionally result in the creation of 12 new doppelgängers across the world that must die for him to complete his plan; this eventually leads him into conflict with the Travelers – a nomadic witch group whose members can possess other people’s bodies – who want to keep Silas alive so that they can use him as a mystical snake oil remedy for their own selfish needs. In the end, Bonnie is successfully resurrected but at the cost of Jeremy Gilbert’s (Steven R. McQueen) life; Silas is finally killed but not before bathing in Damon’s blood and subsequently gaining his immortality; Tyler leaves Mystic Falls after Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) threatens his mother; and Katherine finally meets her demise after 2000 years at Damon and Stefan’s hands.
