Although Stefan is initially suspicious of Elena’s claims, he soon realizes that she is telling the truth and the two become friends.

It is later revealed that Stefan and Elena met before, when they were both children. At the time, Katherine was feeding on humans and had recently turned Damon Salvatore ( Ian Somerhalder) into a vampire. In order to lure Damon away from Katherine, Stefan started feeding on humans himself and caught the attention of a young Elena. When she confronted him about it, he told her that he was only doing it because he loved Damon and wanted to save him from a life of misery. She offered to help Stefan if he promised not to hurt any more people and he agreed.

The two remained in contact over the years and eventually fell in love with each other. However, their relationship was complicated by the fact that Elena was still human and Stefan was a vampire. In the season one finale, Stefan sacrificed his own happiness in order to save Elena’s life by turning off his humanity so that he would no longer be able to feel emotions.
